The Management Consulting sector is firmly on the road to recovery, suggest the findings of the Top Consultant 2011 market update.
The annual survey which collates feedback from Management Consultancy recruiters and job seekers, observed a notable turnaround in the volume of recruitment activity during 2010, particularly for those with Financial Services experience.
It also suggested a continued increase in recruitment activity for 2011, with requirements more widespread across private sector consulting, based on survey feedback which also indicated close to ¾ of recruiters anticipating the need to hire this year as a result of a likely increase in staff attrition rather than tremendous growth within the sector.
The event, which also recognises the efforts and contribution of Management Consultancy recruiters marked a further notable achievement for the Prism team and particularly for Managing Director Chris Sale as we were recognised amongst the Best Management Consultancy Recruitment Firms and “Top Management Consultancy recruiter of the Year” based upon the feedback of Top Consultant subscribers.
Fantastic news as, despite the worst recession in living memory, major awards from Top-Consultant.com confirmed that Prism continue to lead the pack in candidate reach and service. For the third year running Prism were presented with the award for ‘Top Management Consultancy Recruiter’ whilst also coming runner up in the ‘Best Management Consultancy Recruitment Firm’ category, as voted by a sample of over 1000 management consultants. The survey also confirmed Prism as one of the leading recruiters “by volume of candidate applications”, despite rarely advertising on Top Consultant! This clearly demonstrates the extent of Prism’s reach of talented management consultants The survey also gave comprehensive information of the state of the consulting market and an invaluable insight into candidates’ routes and choices in their job search. A sunny mid-March morning greeted three of our consultants: Joanne Brambley, Mike Bottom and
Andrew Smith on their three mile run in support of sports relief. The money raised is then used to help transform the lives of deprived and vulnerable people, both at home and overseas.
The Prism three were accompanied by Jo’s partner, Paul Stevens, who together formed the imaginatively titled team “Bolt eat my dust”! They, and several hundred other keen athletes of all ages and sizes, met on Surrey University’s campus to take part in runs of one, three or even six miles. By the end it was agreed that three was quite enough!
The team completed their three miles in 24 minutes, and could enjoy their post-run refreshment with the knowledge that they had raised over £350 for a very worthy cause.
Prism were once again invited to attend the MCA Council Dinner, with a number of key industry “movers and shakers”.
While the evening provided the perfect forum for industry insights and gossip there was a more serious side: Prism presented a “Market Snapshot” which suggested that while the Public Sector was poised for a decline Financial Services was buoyant, together with the Telecoms Sector. Prism also reported a noticeable upturn in the market generally with more candidates starting to consider their options…. but also apparently engaging in ‘Dutch auctions’ and using offers to secure better deals with their existing employer.
In addition, in a riveting and well informed analysis Allister Heath, Editor of City AM, shared his insights about the future of the UK economy and London as a financial centre. Whilst rather grim listening, it was fascinating to hear his analysis and predictions about the challenges we will face after the election in coming years.

Many candidates find their job search frustrating and fragmented.
Having seen a significant upturn in interview activity since the beginning of September, Prism Executive Recruitment conducted a market survey in early November with a prequalified sample of candidates and employers, with responses from 45 employers and 153 candidates.
The headline results show candidates are slightly more confident but, digging deeper into the responses, opinions are somewhat polarised, with some finding the market very buoyant and more active, while many others are commenting that things are very slow.
As you might expect of a recruitment agency database, many are actively interviewing but many of these are making negative comments about the market. Common themes relate to slow recruitment processes, salary pressures, window shopping and employers setting very tight specifications and unwilling to compromise.
On the employer side, the results are quite startling: the overwhelming majority are primed to recruit AND are finding candidates hard to find. While this might seem at odds with the candidate experience it suggests employers are chasing the same population of candidates who have the “best” CVs AND the “in demand” skillsets and sectors. These include: Public Sector (particularly security cleared candidates), Energy/Utilities, Financial Services, Strategic IT, risk, lean and transformation (both consulting and delivery).
